We only have so much time and energy and money for family fun. But we know that our youngsters, especially those with autism, need something to look forward to each day. Set aside 30 minutes each day for a special summer adventure. Talk about the adventure for several days in advance and remind everyone at breakfast of the upcoming “Adventure for the Day.” The adventure, of course, depends on the interests of your family and your youngster with autism, but here are some ideas for simple, inexpensive activities to get you started.
+ Go swimming or play in the water sprinkler.
+ Bake cookies or churn ice-cream.
+ Play with a Frisbee or play badminton.
+ Give everyone a water gun. Enjoy squirting each other or shooting at trees and fences.
+ Visit the library. Even non-readers find books galore!
+ Visit the zoo or a local farm or even a pet store.
+ Lie on a blanket on the ground after sunset to watch for fireflies and shooting stars.
+ Give everyone a flashlight and take a night hike.
+ Cut up a watermelon outside. Teach your youngster how to spit seeds.
+ Check out happenings at your community parks – free concerts, softball tournaments, festivals, and fireworks.

TIP FOR THE DAY: Introduce each activity as a big adventure – even if it is a modest activity like walking around the block or swinging on the porch swing. Remember that investing a little time in summer activities – even 30 minutes a day – reaps HUGE benefits!
