Yummy Snacks
With a bit of creative thinking, we can add variety and fun into ho-hum daily routines by having several choices of tasty and tempting snacks on hand, whether at school, home, or for break time on the job. Special dietary needs and restrictions as well as food allergies must be considered, of course, but looking around for varied textures, tastes, and colors helps pique interest and brighten up the day.

NATURAL FOODS. We tend to think of chips and crackers for snacks, but fresh fruits and veggies are healthy and tasty munchies. Here are some ideas: watermelon, frozen grapes, frozen fruit juices in paper cups, frozen strawberries, sliced fresh peaches with sugar-free ice cream, crunchy banana chips, dried veggie chips, mini-carrots with dip, apple slices with dip, or apple slices stewed with cinnamon in a bit of water until soft.
CRUNCHIES. Some of my friends with autism love crunchy, crispy snacks. If you snoop around a grocery store, you can expand crunchy snack choices far beyond chips. Try these ideas: Ramen noodles, popcorn, corn nuts, chex mix, goldfish crackers, animal crackers, teddy grahams, mini-pretzels, roasted and unsalted cashews or almonds, whole-grain crackers, miniature seasoned rice cakes, some snack-sized, low-sugar cereals, and other crispy goodies.
SPECIAL TREATS. When you have a bit of extra time, try some of these treats: fruit smoothies, s’mores, fresh baked oatmeal cookies, yogurt covered raisins, or fresh fruit stirred into frozen yogurt.
TIP FOR THE DAY. The key to healthy snacking is to offer several choices so your friend with autism can make a choice, and to introduce tasty new foods occasionally to avoid getting into a rut. Enjoy!
