We welcome you as we celebrate the 500th episode posted on FAQautism.com. Some may wonder why any one topic would warrant 500 different discussions. In reality, autism is a very large umbrella, so these 500 discussions have only begun to scratch the surface.

WHAT WE DO. The mission of FAQautism.com is to maximize the potential and to enhance the quality of life of individuals of all ages with autism and those around them by providing practical tips and effective strategies for everyday living. We share these pointers via concise daily posts – podcasts, e-mail, and blog – read and heard by people around the world. The information is free and without obligation, and subscribers are not tracked or bugged by anyone.
OUR BIRTH. FAQautism.com is the brainchild of Dwight Knoll and his mom, Cathy Knoll. Both are long-time friends with many individuals diagnosed with autism and their families and friends. When Dwight was working with an agency providing services to young adults functioning on the spectrum of autism, he encountered a dearth of resources for helping caregivers learn to deal with challenges that arise in everyday life. He realized that he had learned lots of practical strategies while growing up – spending time with his mom, Cathy, and people with autism of all ages who came to music therapy each week and who participated in various day-camps or other activities over the years. Dwight encouraged Cathy to start sharing some of those tidbits via a daily podcast, and he set up the infrastructure to make that happen. At the time, Cathy didn’t even know what a podcast was, so she just started recording 4-minute blurbs, trusting Dwight to turn them into podcasts. Five hundred (!) episodes later, Cathy still focuses on content, letting Dwight take care of the technical stuff.
THE CONVERSATION. Over the past 500 episodes, we have talked about delicate topics such as toileting and parents dating and dealing with judgmental relatives or clueless professionals. We’ve discussed extreme behavior episodes and communication barriers and sleepless nights. We’ve shared tried-and-true strategies for dealing with transition issues, classroom management, restrictive compulsiveness, and extraordinary sensory sensitivities. We’ve celebrated the gifts and insights unique to autism while at the same time recognizing some of the frustrations and challenges individuals with autism and the people around them encounter.
YOUR HELP. We plan to continue daily posts on FAQautism.com – God willing. We are hoping to spread the word about FAQautism.com to more individuals with autism and their families, teachers, therapists, caregivers, and communities. Since we don’t have the time or money to promote the service, we are depending on YOU to spread the word. You can do two things to help us reach our goal of 500 new folks on this anniversary day:
1. If you have not already done so, please subscribe to FAQautism.com via e-mail or podcast. Either way, you will receive a short e-mail update or podcast each day.
2. Please contact folks you know who are interested in autism and encourage them to subscribe via e-mail or podcast. Just click on http://FAQautism.com
THANK YOU! p.s. don’t forget to blow out the 500 candles before you eat your celebration cupcake ☺
