One of the most prevalent indicators of autism is a shortage of social skills. Individuals with autism are not always aware of social rules. They may not realize that some topics are off-limits in casual social conversation. People of all ages who function on the spectrum of autism can blurt out things they have heard at home without a second thought. Sometimes these are personal and private comments not meant to be shared with other people. Sometimes a family member with autism may repeat snippets of family arguments or other confidential information.
Even people with autism who have very limited communication skills can “spill the beans” or share family chat. The echolalic tendencies of some individuals with autism can result in their repeating entire conversations from home – whether a conversation between family members or a one-sided phone conversation.
All of this is to say that family members of individuals with autism might want to consider measuring their words.
