I am struggling with a 5 yr old boy who is severely autistic. He has no functional language and when teachers attempt to have him follow daily routine, he will throw himself on the floor, scream at the top of his lungs , try to hit, bite kick etc, whatever he can do to get away from the adult and activity presented to him. At this time We are dealing with circle time. Myself and the Speech Path have very different ideas. She says he must be taught to follow the scheduleand sit in the chair during circle time. This is causing my entire circle to be lost as my other students ( all preschool special ed but not all autistic 18 in all) to stop paying attention to myself conducting circle time and staring at him. This other teacher also is trying to Bribe him and coax him over by dangling toys in front of him so he will want them and follow her to circle. This created chaos as now the other children want to play with toys too. Do you have any suggestions? I feel that as long as I show him the picture schedule, show him his seat for circle, and attempt to include him in circletime activities( weather, job selections, music selection etc.) That it is OK for him to play quietly in another center in the room, but I give him a choice of what quiet alternative he may play in aqnd if he travels I require him to return to that area. Always stating you have a choice you can sit in your seat for circle, or play in the _____ area. Is this not apropriate? Please let me know ASAP so that I can sit down with this other person and speak with her about what to do.
